Douglas Smith & Eric Smith at Lake Superior

A family Tradition turn into tragedy when Eric Smith (16) and his father (50) was drowned at Lake Superior. They were swimming in Grand Marais Harbor off Michigan’s Upper Peninsula about 6 p.m. Aug. 5 when a riptide pulled them into deep water. They struggled against the strong current but were not successful to return to the shore. Michigan State Police says that underwater recovery unit located both victims in 20-30 feet of water around 2 p.m. Friday.
