Garcia-Ruiz was 26 years old when he was drowned in Lake Michigan in trying to save his dog. His dog went into the water so he jumped after him to save him. The dog got out of the water successfully but Garcia drowned himself. He was taken to AMITA Health St. Joseph Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
