James Bake at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

James Bake was 32 years old when he drowned in Lake Superior while trying to climb the Miners Castle area of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

He was reported missing at around 5:15 pm when the waves of Lake Superior caused him to fall from an icy rock ledge into Lake Superior.

The US Coast Guards along with Alger County Rescue 21 and the National Park Service started looking for Bake shortly after a call went to 911. However, the search was called off due to bad weather conditions.

Bake’s body was discovered after 5 days of search near the area where Bake fell off on Feb 7, 2023.
