Jonathan Mendez was 21 years old when he lost his life in Lake Michigan near Grand Haven State Park on Sunday. He was swimming when he swept past the buoys before 4 p.m. Sunday.

The Coast Guard rescue team and Grand Haven Township Fire Department assisted in to search for Mendez with the help of a helicopter. They were able to locate him just before 6 pm.

The beach has a red flag on Sunday morning as the waves were 3 to 4 feet high so swimming was not advised.
